Let's Take a Moment...

Did you know that a moment is 90 seconds?[1] Have you ever thought that when someone says you should ‘take a moment’ that you should to stop for a minute and a half? Why don’t you try it now?

...Feels like an eternity doesn’t it?

Speaking of Eternity let me share an illustration with you about what a ‘moment’ in Eternity would be like; it’s an illustration given to me by my pastor. It’ll require a little bit of an imagination.

So let’s pretend there’s a planet that is covered completely by mountains that are all seven times taller than Mount Everest. What’s more, is that these mountains are made of solid diamond. Now, once a year, a little sparrow comes to this planet and lands on one of these diamond mountains to peck the surface – just once – then he flies away for a year before he comes back to peck just once again. Imagine the length of time it would take for that single bird to get the surface of that entire planet as smooth as glass.

And that is just a moment in Eternity.

One of my all-time favorite depictions of Heaven comes from C.S. Lewis’ classic Chronicles of Narnia children’s series. It comes at the end of the final book when the children taste the fruit in the New Narnia; Lewis instructed his readers to think of the best tasting food that they’d ever had and then pretend that tasted like medicine compared to the food in the New Narnia.

It’s kind of cool to think that God is offering us a shot at that Eternity.[2] The Bible says that God loved us so much that he sent his one and only son to die for our transgressions so that we could live with Him in that Eternity.[3]

Why don’t you take a moment to ponder that?

Romans 10:9 – That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

[1] A moment is a medieval unit of time equal to 1.5 minutes or 1/40 of an hour. In modern English it usually refers to "a short period of time" but doesn't specifically say how short (according this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_(time) )

[2] For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

[3] “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
